Northern Indiana - LaGrange Country

Northern Indiana

Few regions in the U.S. Midwest match Northern Indiana when it comes to aesthetic beauty, economic prosperity, and overall happiness of the residents and the visitors alike. Northern Indiana is a region of the U.S. State of Indiana of course, including though no less than 26 counties which for some border the other U.S. states of Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. Northern Indiana is also considered part of the Great Lakes Megalopolis which simply applies to regional areas that are within a certain proximity to the Great Lakes. The area is generally classified into other sub-regions too though.  For example, Northwest Indiana, (or the Calumet Region), is closely tied with Chicago economically, culturally, and politically and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. (Northwest Indiana is just over the border from Chicago). The north central region (or Michiana as it is called by the locals) centers on South Bend metropolitan area, with economic connections to southwest Michigan too. Northeast Indiana is centered on the Fort Wayne metropolitan area for which it is probably best known by the locals and by visitors alike.

The first thing people notice about Northern Indiana is the beauty of the area.  The Northern Indiana landscape is physically characterized by flat to very rolling and hilly terrain, which typically ranges anywhere from 600 to 1,000 feet above sea level. To add to the beauty, glacial kettle lakes are found throughout Northeast Indiana all over the place, ad with sand dunes share the Lake Michigan shoreline in the northwest sector of the region. Kosciusko County is home to the largest natural lake (Wawasee) and the deepest natural lake (Tippecanoe) in the entire state of Indiana.  This makes the Northern Indiana area a big recreation destination too. The Eastern Continental Divide runs through the region following the top of the Valparaiso Moraine too, which also provides interesting climates and weather patterns in that area. Besides a few urban areas, much of Northern Indiana lies in the agricultural Corn Belt and has lots of different farms of different types and kinds.

Northern Indiana isn’t just all pleasantries though.  The area is a strong, economic powerhouse for the entire state and for the Midwest for that matter.  For example, the north central area of Northern Indiana, (centered on Warsaw), is home to several companies specializing in the development and production of orthopedic medical devices interestingly enough. Nearly one-third of the $38 billion global orthopedic industry is concentrated in north central Indiana in fact.  Elkhart and surrounding municipalities in the Michiana region are home to the largest concentration of recreational vehicle and mobile home manufacturers in the entire United States of America including Forest River, Gulfstream Coach, Heartland Recreational Vehicles, Jayco, and Monaco Coach, among several, several others. Some 83 percent of American RVs are produced in Elkhart County alone.
